When to use a scale bar

Use one when the drawing may be resized after export or print. The bar stays visually trustworthy even when a typed ratio becomes easy to miss.

Keep the bar short, keep the labels readable, and match the unit to the audience. Plans usually read better in meters or feet, regional maps usually read better in kilometers or miles.

Quick checks

  • Use 4 to 6 segments for most printed layouts.
  • Reduce segments when labels start colliding.
  • Keep alternating fills high contrast for grayscale printing.
  • Place the final bar close to the map frame or drawing border.
