Understanding Decimal Multiplication
Decimal multiplication is similar to whole number multiplication, but with an extra step to place the decimal point correctly in the product. To multiply decimals:
- Multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers, ignoring the decimal points.
- Count the total number of decimal places in both factors (numbers being multiplied).
- In the product, place the decimal point so that there are as many decimal places as you counted in the previous step. Count from right to left.
For example, to multiply 1.2 and 2.5:
- Multiply 12 and 25 as whole numbers, which gives 300.
- 1.2 has one decimal place, and 2.5 has one decimal place. Total decimal places = 1 + 1 = 2.
- Place the decimal point in 300 so that there are two decimal places. Starting from the right, count two places to the left: 3.00.
Therefore, 1.2 x 2.5 = 3.00 or 3.
