About Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a way of expressing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form. It has the form of a × 10b, where a is the coefficient (or significand) and b is the exponent.
- Coefficient (a): A number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. It contains the significant digits.
- Base and Exponent (10b): Indicates the power of 10 by which the coefficient is multiplied. The exponent b is an integer, positive for large numbers and negative for small numbers.
For example, the number 5,000,000,000 can be written as 5 × 109 in scientific notation. Similarly, 0.00005 can be written as 5 × 10-5. Scientific notation is widely used in science, engineering, and mathematics to simplify calculations and represent values efficiently.
