What is an Optical Level?

An optical level, also known as a surveyor's level, is a precision instrument used to establish or verify points in the same horizontal plane. It is commonly used in surveying and construction to transfer, set, or measure horizontal levels. While primarily used for horizontal leveling, some optical levels can also measure vertical angles. The basic principle involves setting up the level at a convenient location, then sighting through the telescope to take readings on graduated staffs (level rods) at different points. The difference in these readings indicates the difference in elevation between points.

  • Key Use Cases: Construction, surveying, landscaping, and setting foundations.
  • Functionality: Establishing horizontal planes, measuring vertical angles (in some models).
  • Benefits: Ensures accuracy in leveling and angle measurements for precise construction and surveying projects.
