Why the formula has one-third

A cone with radius rr and height hh occupies exactly one-third of the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height.

That is why the formula is V= rac13pi r^2 h instead of just base area times height.

What to measure

  • The radius is the distance from the base center to the circle edge.
  • The height is the straight perpendicular distance from the base to the apex.
  • The slant height is useful for surfaces, but volume uses the vertical height.
