Understanding Fraction Addition

Adding fractions involves combining parts of wholes. When fractions share the same denominator, simply add the numerators. For different denominators, find a common denominator, often the least common multiple (LCM). Convert each fraction to this common denominator, then add the numerators. Finally, simplify the result.

For example, to add 1/2 and 1/3, the common denominator is 6. 1/2 becomes 3/6, and 1/3 becomes 2/6. Adding them gives (3+2)/6 = 5/6.

  • Numerator: Top number, parts of a whole.
  • Denominator: Bottom number, total parts in the whole.
  • Common Denominator: Shared multiple for adding fractions with different denominators.
